Tristan's Story:
Tristan is as tough as a wild horse comes!!
He was born on the Salt River in Arizona, part of the famous Salt River Wild Horses.
Early in his life, he was attacked by a mountain lion (yes, the BLM claims wild horses have no natural predators and Tristan would disagree, but nevermind that). Miraculously, he survived.
A huge scar across his hindquarters is all that remains from the attack!
He grew up wild & free, protected with the Salt River Wild Horses.
Finally, when it was time to leave his family and gather a band of his own Tristan broke into the reservation that neighbors the Salt River and stole four mares for himself- Kaia, Trista, Nizhoni, and Denali.
When Tristan brought his mares with him and returned to the river after months and months with these mares of his own that he was so proud of, the Forest Service demanded that the mares could not stay on the Salt River since they were not part of the closely managed herd of Salt River Horses that are approved to be on the River.
Salt River Management Group, with the decision of their supporters, opted to remove Tristan along with the mares he worked so hard to gather for himself and give all five of them sanctuary for life here at Nirvana, so that Tristan could keep his family!
Tristan was gelded and they were all released into our sanctuary to run free. As the years pass... Tristan continues to gather more and more mares!! The large band you see running in front of the tree are ALL his 🤣
Good luck getting any photos of him when he is not absolutely surrounded by his mares! He is quite a popular guy within our big herd! The last photos are of him and his mares, wild at the Salt River, and also a lovely drawing someone made of him after seeing his family in the wild on the Salt River!
