Alzena the Alpine Mare's Story:
Alzena is obviously the mare in charge!! She is a ball of feisty energy, and when she walks everyone moves out of her way. A true lead mare in all her bold glory!! The first day I was sitting with the mares, she spent a long while just moving around, looking at me from different angles, and putting her head high and low to get a look at me (horses don’t have good depth perception so moving their head around helps their brains make a more complete picture). Then she approached and sniffed my boots. After that she processed everything, realized that I am not a threat, and then proceeded to show some big releases of stress- giant yawns I captured in photo form 💞
It’s a beautiful thing to see a wild animal who has been put through hell, relax and release and begin the first step in the process of healing 🐴
The beloved Alpine Wild Horses of the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona are under attack. After the Forest Service announced a complete removal of the horses from the forest there have been multiple shooters running rampant around the forest and shooting any horse they can find. In the latest shooting, 20 horses have been found dead and an additional 30 horses are missing and presumed dead. There were also multiple injured with gunshots and still alive, wondering why they fell victim to such a madman.
So far 80 Alpine Wild Horses have been rounded up. We are working hard to reunite some families from the Alpine Forest in our dedicated "Alpine Pasture"! With your sponsorship, we will be able to save more than originally intended, so thank you so very much for helping these beautiful souls.
