Piper's Story:
This beautiful lady was born in 2018. She was adopted from the BLM by a family who has multiple members adopt 4 horses each, each horse providing them a $1,000 adoption incentive payment from the BLM after a year when the horse is titled. In that year, these horses are bred to an Appaloosa stallion to add weight to their thinning frames!
Horses from this same ring of people abusing the BLM's adoption program without ANY repercussions at all have dumped groups of three pregnant mares in the Stroud Oklahoma kill pen in August '23, October '23, January '24, February '24, AND the group of three including these two mares were dumped in March '24. It is a complete SHAME that these adopters are able to use and abuse this many of America's Wild Horses in this manner without any repercussions, and are STILL allowed to adopt horses from the BLM!
Thanks to several private donors, we were able to bail this deserving mustang mare out of the kill pen and save her from her deadline to ship to slaughter on Monday, March 18th.
She arrived home on March 27th, 2024 and the work to get her healthy again began! She was severely emaciated and far too thin after being in the kill pen.
By mid April her body and mind had already been transformed into being soooo much healthier! We love seeing these horses return to LIFE after they are rescued and brought home to Nirvana. Their quarantine period is a special time of renewal and a promise of the care they will receive for the rest of their lives!
Piper remains extremely wild and she is really afraid of people. We have been sitting with her just to teach her that humans are not scary. We will see if she becomes curious or decides to remain very wild- either way we adore her!
As she continues to gain weight we will know for sure if she is pregnant, and we look forward to meeting her little one and watching her get healthier and healthier as time goes on!
