Geronimo's Story:
We saw the most powerful horse strut down the hill to the auction holding pens in May of 2026. He took our breath away. His spirit was so large it filled the whole auction grounds!
A worker came by and told us that he KNEW that horse! He told us that he was a bucking horse, that he and other staff members there had ridden in a rodeo.
You see... when these horses are no longer able to make their owners money, they are oftentimes disposed of. In Geronimo's case, he was dumped at the Bowie Horse Auction where kill buyers wait to buy wild horses just like him to fill their trailers to ship to slaughter!
He had given 25 years of his life to bucking for these people... and the retirement they gave him was death in a slaughter plant. It's despicable.
The worker said he would love for one of the rescues to get him and just allow him to have the retirement he deserves out on pasture with other horses in peace.
We put him on our list.
Soon it became apparent that he had a girlfriend. A gorgeous black and white pinto mare who was also an ex bucking horse who had spent her life making her owners lots of money.
We promised them both a better future- a retirement they deserved after giving up so much of themselves to the job they had been made to do.
Finally... after months in quarantine, they were released to run free once again!
Geronimo is the leader of his band, and he is absolutely thriving in our sanctuary.
