Over 20,000 horses ship to slaughter across the border in Mexico every single year. These are wild horses, old horses, lame horses, and injured horses. The horses no one wanted to give a chance! That's where we come in. We intercept America's Wild Horses in their final stops before becoming meat in Mexico, and give them a lifetime in sanctuary instead.
Right now- the US/Mexico border is CLOSED to horse slaughter exports due to a parasite outbreak along the border, which may seem like a good thing because no horses are being slaughtered in Mexico.
But here is the reality: America's Wild Horses are still shipping to Canada for slaughter. Now, the horses sold to ship to slaughter in Mexico are STUCK in what are called kill pens (essentially feedlots for horses) where they don't receive medical care, and there's usually not enough hay to go around. These are places filled with small pens, where sickness and disease run rampant and are especially dangerous to wild horses who have had limited exposure to the diseases domestic horses face all the time.
They've been stuck there since the border closed at the beginning of June 2026.... that's weeks and weeks on end with no hope in sight. There are mom & baby pairs, groups of bonded Bureau of Land Management mustangs, and whole families inside these lots!
For our August rescue mission we are going INSIDE the biggest kill pen in Texas which also hosts a horse auction once a month, to share the stories of the wild horses that we meet there and WITH YOUR HELP- bringing home as many wild horses as we can. We have a goal to bring 40 horses home to safety and freedom!
This is an opportunity not just to step in for the horses headed through this terrible auction or currently stuck in the kill pen, but to change the future for any American horses that find themselves headed for slaughter.
How, you ask? Well, the legislators that are still hesitant of passing the SAFE act, which would permanently ban the export of American horses for slaughter, are looking at this time period and saying "Well, if we pass the SAFE Act, where do all these unwanted horses end up?!" If we can SHOW them that rescue communities will come together for these horses, and convince them that with proper funding rescues and sanctuaries are happy to step in for these horses, that will prove that there are no unwanted horses. Then, we are closer than ever to having the SAFE Act passed, protecting ALL of America's horses for the future to come. Yes- this rescue mission is THAT important!!!
