America's Wild Horses... "managed" and rounded up by the Bureau of Land Management. Sold to an individual who was breeding them for God knows how long. Sold directly for slaughter, no chances at a good home.
12 pregnant moms, 8 babies, and one gelding were already set to ship to slaughter the week following Thanksgiving 2025.
We got the call from Bowie Kill Pen. Someone dropped off 21 mustangs. 12 BLM mustang mommas who are all pregnant-eight of them with young babies already at their sides, and one gelding who came in with the group. Their Protector.
"Do you want to save any, before they are shipped next week?" they asked.
Well, OF COURSE we wanted to save these pregnant mommas from being slaughtered with babies in their bellies.... we have over thousands of acres of sanctuary land, staff and volunteer help, and the ability to care for wild horses in a manner that is sensitive to the trauma they've endured at the hand of man...
"WE WILL TAKE THE WHOLE GROUP", I wanted to scream...
But I replied- "I'll have to see what our community can do, and let you know."
So- I passed the ask along to our incredible community - who are the only ones who can truly give them a chance, a shot at a future, a forever in sanctuary instead of the worst possible death...
AND YOU DID!
First, we saved 7 mom & baby pairs. 14 out of the 21! Because of that... the kill pen did not have enough horses to ship the load out to the slaughter plant in Mexico that week, and we were granted something these horses almost never get- more TIME!
In the next two days, we were able to secure all 21 and bring them home to quarantine at our sanctuary, together, once and for all.
After a few months, they were released to run free once again.
And now... the babies that would've been orphaned when their mommas shipped are growing big and strong, we've met several of the babies that these mommas carried through so much grief and terror as they approached the brink of being slaughtered, and these mares and Protector are absolutely THRIVING being wild once again.
Perhaps capture and Bureau of Land Management holding and the person who was breeding them and the kill pen and the transport and all of the chaos has faded into a distant memory amidst days spent napping in the sun, grazing, and watching the youngsters play together.
