When we go to a public auction, we are bidding against kill buyers in real time. These are people who made $18 million in 2025 funneling American horses across the Mexican border into the global horsemeat trade. They are organized. They are funded. 5. Contact Your Legislators About the SAFE Act
This one is for the person who wants to go even further. Who wants their impact to outlast any single donation, any single horse, any single rescue mission.
The Save America's Forgotten Equines Act — the SAFE Act — would permanently ban horse slaughter in the United States and permanently ban the export of American horses to Mexico and Canada for slaughter. Not a temporary policy. Not a funding decision that expires. A permanent ban.
This bill has strong bipartisan support. It passed out of the House Transportation Committee in May 2026 with 229 cosponsors. It is closer to becoming law than it has ever been. And it needs to hear from the public.
One of the main arguments against it is: "What happens to all the horses if we close slaughter?" Sanctuaries and rescues like Nirvana are the answer to that question. We exist to be that answer. But we need legislators to hear — loudly and clearly — that the rescue community is here, that the public is paying attention, and that we are ready to step up.
