Marshmallow Alpine Mare's Story:
Marshmallow was passed over by every single bidder in one of the previous Alpine Wild Horse auctions. She has an old injury to her left rear hock and canon bone where bone was exposed and proud flesh grew over the wound. She is not sound at a trot, so sanctuary life will be the very best option for her. The contractor in charge of the round ups was gracious enough to gift this mare to Kelly Kilmain, whom has been largely responsible for saving MANY Alpine Wild Horses through her fundraising.
Kelly's niece and nephew got to name this beautiful girl, and at ages 7 and 4, they decided to call her Marshmallow with the nickname "snowsprinkle". We LOVE that this opportunity to name this wild horse gave these kiddos insight into what is happening with our wild horses. To truly make change, it's important to educate the younger generations to come on the importance of these historic icons!

The beloved Alpine Wild Horses of the Apache Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona are under attack. Last year they numbered around 400, wild and free on 400,000 acres! These horses are historic, and descendants of horses brought along by Francisco Vasquez de Coronado during Spanish expeditions through the area in the 1540's! After the Forest Service announced a complete removal of the horses from the forest there have been multiple shooters running rampant around the forest and shooting any horse they can find. In the latest shooting, 38 horses have been found dead and an additional 15 horses are missing and presumed dead. There were also multiple injured with gunshots and left alive, wondering why they fell victim to such a madman. Two foals were also orphaned, and luckily have been doing well on their own.
So far over 80 Alpine Wild Horses have been rounded up. We are working hard to reunite some families from the Alpine Forest in our dedicated "Alpine Pasture"!
